Dumbwaiters and Material Conveyors: From Kitchen Lifts to Grain Elevators
The difference between small service lifts, dumbwaiters and bulk-material conveyors such as bucket and grain elevators.
Overview
Not every "elevator" carries people. Some carry laundry, dishes, sacks of grain or bricks. This post explains the difference between small service lifts and material conveyors.
Dumbwaiters in the home
A dumbwaiter, sometimes written dumb waiter for home use, is a small lift for goods. You will see dumbwaiter elevator, dumbwaiter lift, dumb waiters and even dumb elevator used for the same idea. A residential dumbwaiter is a popular addition to multi-storey homes and restaurants, and buyers often search for a dumbwaiter for sale when planning a renovation. A laundry dumbwaiter or laundry elevator moves clothes between bedrooms and a utility room, a kitchen elevator brings food up from a ground-floor kitchen to a dining room, and a clothesline elevator is a traditional pulley-style system.
Bucket and conveyor systems
Agricultural and industrial buyers use very different equipment under a similar name. A bucket elevator moves bulk material such as grain, sand or fertiliser in a chain of buckets. A bucket conveyor or bucket elevator conveyor is the same principle, and bucket elevator manufacturers build them for mills, farms and plants. The elevator bucket is the individual scoop, and an elevator conveyor moves material along a line rather than up a shaft.
Hay and grain
A hay elevator or hay conveyor lifts bales into a loft. A grain elevator is a large storage and lifting facility, and grain elevator for sale listings often refer to farm buildings. Bunge grain elevator searches usually refer to a large agricultural company's storage sites.
Vertical reciprocating conveyors
A vrc elevator, or vertical reciprocating conveyor, lifts pallets between floors in a factory without carrying people.
