Commercial, Passenger and Industrial Lifts: A Buyer's Overview
Passenger, freight, service, construction and fire lifts explained, so you can describe what your building needs.
Overview
Commercial buildings, factories and warehouses all depend on vertical transport, but the equipment differs greatly from a home lift. This guide separates the main categories so you can describe what you need clearly.
People movers
A commercial elevator or a bank of commercial lifts serves offices, retail and mixed-use towers. A passenger elevator, also called passenger lifts in Indian usage, is designed around speed, comfort and waiting time, and passenger lift manufacturers tailor capacity to the number of people in the building. A service elevator or a set of service lifts carries staff, cleaners and equipment without disturbing the public lobby.
Goods movers
A freight elevator, a freight lift, a cargo lift elevator, a cargo elevator or a goods elevator is built for loads rather than people, with reinforced floors, wide doors and strong guide rails. Industrial lifts, an industrial elevator and a pallet elevator serve factories and warehouses where forklifts or trolleys need to move stock between floors.
Construction and temporary use
Building sites use a construction elevator to move workers and materials while the permanent lift is not yet ready. Elevator construction and lift construction also describe the process of building a shaft, pit and machine space. Alimak elevator is a widely known name for construction hoists. A mewp, or mewps in the plural, is a mobile elevating work platform used for work at height, and it is a different category from a passenger lift.
Sector-specific needs
A mine elevator must withstand harsh conditions. A hospital elevator needs space for beds and smooth stopping. An elevator hotel installation should balance guests, luggage and staff, and an elevator in mall has to handle heavy peak traffic. A fire fighting lift or fire lift operates during a fire under special controls so responders can reach upper floors. A building elevator or building lift is the general term for any of these.
Odd names you may run into
You may also see brick elevator, big elevator, 6 ton crane, clark lift and jenny lift in search results. Brick elevator and big elevator are informal descriptions, a 6 ton crane is separate lifting equipment, and clark lift and jenny lift are name-led searches that rarely describe a passenger system. The elevator market itself is growing steadily as cities build upwards.
